I have a sketch signed by "Picasso" -- it shows an acrobat similar to the one in the painting. He is on a horse.

We are studying this painting at the Barnes and I would like to know more about its provenance - were these circus performers or models? Why are they sad and looking in opposite directions despite the obvious affection between them?
