In the end of 1897 Picasso successfully entered the San Fernando Royal Academy in Madrid - the best Spanish fine art establishment at the time. However, half a year later he left to start learning by himself. He spent much time in the Prado Museum, where he explored works by Velázquez and El Greco, made copies and painted his own sketches in the manner of masters.
